An affordability worksheet for comparing tax options

Use the same financial assumptions when comparing different proposed routes.

Updated October 23, 2026 · 2 min read · General educational information

Start with your situation

Set out income, necessary costs, assets, current taxes, and uncertainty once. Compare each proposal against that shared picture so a favorable result is not created merely by changing the assumptions.

Affordability needs evidence

A repayment proposal is more useful when it starts with real cash flow. Use received income, necessary expenses, and current tax obligations rather than a best-case projection. For a hardship review, the IRS may request financial statements and supporting documents. Your own planning budget is useful preparation, but it does not determine agency eligibility.

Use a range rather than one optimistic number

Review several recent months and identify recurring costs, occasional bills, and irregular income. Keep business and household figures distinguishable. Test an ordinary month and a low-income month, then write down the assumptions. Ask a qualified professional how the agency's financial standards differ from your personal budget before treating an apparent surplus as an approved payment.

  • Gather recent income evidence
  • List necessary recurring expenses
  • Document seasonal or unusual costs

Questions to consider

Will the IRS accept every expense in my budget?

Not necessarily. The agency reviews financial information under applicable rules; a household spending list alone does not establish an allowable expense.
